Biomass: renewable energy for a sustainable future

Direct biomass combustion is one of the most effective solutions for producing energy from renewable sources, making a tangible contribution to the transition to a greener future.

Wood is still the main biomass resource globally, but the variety of available fuels is vast and constantly evolving. Among the main sources are:

  • Forestry waste and sawmill residues (bark, sawdust, shavings, twigs);
  • Urban waste wood (pallets, packaging, demolition materials);
  • Agricultural residues (straw, rice husks, walnut shells, olive residue, cotton stalks);
  • Dedicated energy crops (poplar, willow, switchgrass);
  • Natural resources such as peat or manure;
  • Organic waste from production processes.

Energy production from biomass can be considered CO₂-neutral, as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during combustion is offset by that absorbed by plants during their growth cycle. This condition is met if the biomass is replenished sustainably.

Various technologies, designed to adapt to the various types of biomass, allow for the best exploitation of the energy content of these natural resources.

Waste to Energy advantage

With extensive experience in the direct combustion of municipal solid waste, W.T.E. Waste to Energy is the ideal technical partner for the development of biomass energy plants.

This expertise allows us to effectively address the challenges associated with the use of complex fuels, such as:

  • Materials with high moisture content and low calorific value (e.g., agri-food waste, paper, distillery residues);
  • Biomass generating large quantities of ash or dust (e.g., rice husks);
  • Fuels containing chlorine or chlorinated compounds (e.g., fresh straw);
  • Significant presence of nitrogen or derivatives (e.g., chicken manure).

Thanks to our experience in the waste-to-energy sector, we have developed a design approach geared towards maximum flexibility, optimizing energy efficiency, operational reliability, and service continuity even with heterogeneous or variable-quality biomass.
